Clinical Pastoral Education

2010

Spiritual Care Summer

CPE Chaplains and Supervisors

The full-time CPE program requires 40 hours involvement each week. The program runs  Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM. Every chaplain serves as the duty chaplain once every ten days, which includes sleeping overnight in the hospital. A typical day begins with all chaplains meeting for a morning reflection and report time. The next six hours of the day are unscheduled so that the CPE student can be involved in the life of the two floors that they will be covering as the chaplain. In the afternoon the CPE students participate in group learning activities. Twice each week pastoral reports (verbatims) are presented by the CPE students. Also there are two unstructured group meetings in which chaplains raise learning issues. Once each week there is a seminar on pastoral care, which often is  presented by a specialist on a topic central to their professional specialty. We end the week with a non-interactive reflection session in which chaplains theologize from their faith perspective. There is individual supervision with one of the CPE supervisors weekly. Everyone is required to write a goals statement, at least six pastoral reports, and a final self-appraisal. Reading is assigned as needed.
